BaZi & Five Elements Calculator

BaZi Four Pillars with solar-term boundaries

Your standard time is compared with precision apparent-solar-longitude term times to apply Start of Spring and monthly boundaries. This recreates a traditional cultural system for recreation; it does not scientifically predict personality or the future.

Enter birth details

Choose the standard time used at the birthplace on the birth date. Enter a custom offset if daylight saving or another rule applied. Local apparent solar time is not corrected automatically.

Enter a birth date to display the Four Pillars and Five Elements.

Calculation Basis and Limits of the Four Pillars Result

Calculation basis and last reviewed: September 14, 2026

Calculation Basis

The Gregorian date, minute-level local time and UTC offset are converted to a time range and compared with precision apparent-solar-longitude term times generated in advance with Astronomy Engine. If the year or month pillar changes within the entered minute, both possibilities are shown. The 60-pair Gan-Zhi cycle and traditional month/hour stem tables are then applied. The element bars give equal weight to each visible stem and branch's primary element.

Reference Limits

Historical daylight saving time, longitude-based local apparent solar time and schools that change the day during the late Zi hour are not corrected automatically. Precision term times are stored to the nearest second, but almanacs can differ slightly through rounding. Hidden stems are listed but receive no arbitrary weight in the bars.

When to Confirm Officially

For a birth close to a solar-term transition or 23:00, verify the birthplace and historical standard time and compare a specialist almanac. Treat the result as traditional culture and recreation, not as evidence for health, career, relationships, finances or another important decision.

Usage Tips

Check the birth time and historical UTC offset before comparing charts

Enter a Gregorian birth date, local clock time and the standard UTC offset used at the birthplace to calculate pillars across solar-term boundaries. If the time is unknown, you can omit the hour pillar. Compare another specialist almanac for births near a term transition or 23:00. Element counts organize a traditional cultural framework and should not be used to judge personality, health, relationships, aptitude or future events.

What is BaZi & Five Elements Calculator?

The Four Pillars and Five Elements Calculator maps a Gregorian birth date and local time to the traditional year, month, day and hour pillars, then summarizes Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The year changes at Start of Spring rather than Lunar New Year, and the month follows twelve solar-term boundaries. The heavenly stem of the day is shown as the Day Master, and the traditional hidden stems of each earthly branch are listed. For a transparent comparison, each of the eight visible characters contributes one primary element. When birth time is unknown, the hour pillar is omitted and six characters are counted; if a solar-term boundary occurs on that date, the calculator shows every possible year/month pillar and element distribution instead of assuming a time. Four Pillars is a traditional cultural system, not a scientifically validated predictor of personality or future events.

How to Use

  1. 1 Enter the Gregorian, not lunar, date of birth.
  2. 2 Enter the local birth time to the recorded minute, or turn off the birth-time checkbox if unknown. If a solar-term boundary falls within that minute, both possibilities are shown.
  3. 3 Choose the standard time used at the birthplace. Korea is UTC+9; enter a custom offset if daylight saving or a historical time rule produced a different offset.
  4. 4 Review each pillar's heavenly stem, earthly branch, primary element and hidden stems.
  5. 5 Review the Day Master and visible element and polarity counts without treating the counts as a complete fortune reading.

How solar terms and the 60-pair cycle produce four pillars

Last reviewed: September 14, 2026

Visible-character element count

element count = one primary element per heavenly stem + one per earthly branch

Eight visible characters are counted when the time is known and six when the hour pillar is omitted. Hidden stems are not given arbitrary weights.

February 10, 2024 at noon in Korea Standard Time

  • • Gregorian date 2024-02-10
  • • Birth time 12:00
  • • Standard time UTC+9
  1. 1. After Start of Spring: year pillar Jia-Chen and Yin-month pillar Bing-Yin
  2. 2. Day pillar Jia-Chen and noon hour pillar Geng-Wu

The four pillars are Jia-Chen, Bing-Yin, Jia-Chen and Geng-Wu; visible elements total Wood 3, Fire 2, Earth 2, Metal 1 and Water 0.

How to read the result

  • The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar, Jia Wood in this example.
  • The bars compare which primary elements appear visibly; they are not an overall BaZi score.

Conditions that change the result

  • A birth extremely close to a solar-term transition can differ when another almanac rounds the transition to a different second or minute.
  • Historical daylight saving time, longitude-based apparent solar time and late-Zi-hour schools are outside this calculator's automatic corrections.

Common input mistakes

  • Entering a lunar date directly in the Gregorian field produces a chart for the wrong day.
  • Treating an absent visible element as automatically deficient or unfavorable exceeds what the simple count shows.

Reference Knowledge

  • ● The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches combine into a repeating 60-pair Gan-Zhi cycle from Jia-Zi to Gui-Hai.
  • ● The year boundary is Start of Spring at solar longitude 315°, and month branches proceed from Yin month in 30° solar-longitude sectors.
  • ● Traditional double hours assign Zi to 23:00–01:00, Chou to 01:00–03:00 and so on.
  • ● This calculator changes the day pillar at 00:00 local standard time. It does not apply schools that advance the date at the late Zi hour.
  • ● The Five Elements bars count the primary element of each visible stem and branch equally. They do not assign arbitrary weights to hidden stems or seasonal strength.
  • ● Solar-term boundaries use times generated to the nearest second for 1900–2100 with Astronomy Engine's precision apparent-solar-longitude calculation.

FAQ

Q. Can I enter a lunar-calendar birthday?

A.

No. The input expects a Gregorian date. If you only know a lunar birthday, first use the Solar–Lunar Date Converter to find its Gregorian date.

Q. Does the Four Pillars year change at Lunar New Year?

A.

This calculator follows the common Four Pillars convention of changing the year at Start of Spring, when solar longitude reaches 315°, rather than on January 1 or Lunar New Year.

Q. What if I do not know the birth time?

A.

Turn off the birth-time checkbox. The calculator leaves the hour pillar unknown and counts six visible characters. If a solar-term boundary occurs during that date, it shows both possible year/month pillars and element distributions rather than inventing a noon birth.

Q. Is a missing visible element bad?

A.

That conclusion does not follow from this chart. The bars are a simple count of visible primary elements and do not score season, hidden stems or interactions. One absent visible element is not a scientific or complete judgment.

Q. Why can another BaZi calculator show different pillars?

A.

Tools may differ in historical time zones, daylight saving time, longitude correction, exact solar-term instants and whether the date advances during the late Zi hour. Compare calculation rules for a boundary birth.

Q. Are hidden stems included in the bars?

A.

They are listed under each branch but excluded from the bars. Interpretive schools use different weighting systems, so this tool avoids implying that one arbitrary weight is universal.

Q. Can this result determine personality or career?

A.

No. Four Pillars belongs to traditional culture and recreation. It is not a validated way to predict personality, ability, health, relationships, career suitability or future events.
