Calculation Basis
Calculates non-HDL cholesterol and the total-to-HDL ratio from total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides. When direct LDL is absent and triglycerides are within the supported range, LDL is estimated with the Friedewald equation.
Reference Limits
Calculated LDL is not a direct measurement, and error can increase with high triglycerides or different test conditions. The displayed ranges do not replace laboratory reference ranges or an assessment of individual cardiovascular risk.
When to Confirm Officially
If a result is outside the reference range, or you have diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or a relevant family history, do not change medication or diet from this estimate alone. Review the complete lipid panel with a clinician.

How the lipid-panel values are calculated

The second expression is the Friedewald estimate in mg/dL. This tool uses it only when direct LDL is blank, fasting is selected, and triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL.
Example: total 198, HDL 52, triglycerides 110 mg/dL

The example produces non-HDL 146 mg/dL and estimated LDL 124 mg/dL. These values alone do not determine treatment.
How to read the result
- If a lab report contains a directly reported LDL value, use it before the calculated estimate.
- Non-HDL subtracts HDL from total cholesterol and includes LDL plus other atherogenic cholesterol.
- Total/HDL, LDL/HDL, and triglyceride/HDL ratios are supporting numbers; this tool does not assign diagnostic cutoffs to them.
Conditions that change the result
- The tool suppresses Friedewald LDL when triglycerides are 400 mg/dL or higher or when nonfasting is selected.
- Friedewald estimates can diverge more from laboratory measurements at low LDL or higher triglyceride levels.
- The mmol/L option uses different conversion factors for cholesterol and triglycerides.
Common input mistakes
- Do not enter mmol/L results while the tool is set to mg/dL or mix units across fields.
- Total cholesterol must be greater than HDL for a meaningful non-HDL result.
- Leaving LDL blank when the report already provides it can hide the more relevant reported value.

Q.Can I calculate this without entering LDL?
Yes, if total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides are available, the panel is fasting, and triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL. In that case the calculator can estimate LDL with the Friedewald equation. If your lab report includes direct LDL, use that value instead.
Q.Why can my lab-reported LDL differ from the calculated LDL?
Laboratories may use direct LDL measurement or a different estimation method. Nonfasting samples and high triglycerides can also make the Friedewald estimate less reliable. For official interpretation, use the lab report and your health professional's explanation.
Q.Can I use it with a nonfasting test?
You can still organize total cholesterol, HDL, triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol, and supporting ratios as reference information. If LDL is not entered directly and the test is nonfasting or fasting status is unknown, the calculator does not show an estimated LDL value.
Q.What if my lab report uses mmol/L?
Switch the unit to mmol/L and enter the values exactly as shown on the report. The calculator converts them internally to display common mg/dL reference ranges, but the official lab interpretation and professional explanation should take priority.
